UMN Pre-MSTP Mentoring Program 2025
The Pre-MSTP Mentoring Program, is an individualized mentorship opportunity to help potential MD/PhD applicants in learning more and preparing to apply to programs. They are hoping to reach motivated undergraduate or post-baccalaureate students across the country that may be interested in pursuing an MD/PhD to apply this coming cycle. Please see below for details, as well as the link to the online application which closes December 20, 2024.
What is it: A program designed to match students who are interested in becoming physician scientists, with current UMN MSTP students who will provide longitudinal mentorship and preparation for MD/PhD applications.
Why: Applying to MD/PhD programs can seem intimidating and quite confusing. They want to help students interested in pursuing this path with guidance related to research opportunities, clinical interests, next steps after graduation, and application guidance. They strive to recruit and support individuals from diverse backgrounds of many forms – including, but not limited to thought, geography, faith, experiences, background, ethnicity, gender and interests.

Service Improvement Project Volunteering
Xuan Li, a fellow in gynecologic oncology is looking to work with interested student volunteers. They have a service/quality improvement project looking to assist low income cancer patients from the MHealth Fairview Cancer Center with obtaining emergency financial coverage. Looking for student volunteers who are interested in supporting patients in need of cancer care by helping them complete Medicaid and Emergency Medical Assistance applications.
The goal of the proposed quality improvement project is to provide patient-level support beyond the support already provided by our financial advisor team. This can help with delays in insurance coverage and cancer care - and to improve inadequate training for future healthcare providers in navigating the U.S. payor system.
